STAR Reading & Math

The following message was emailed to all caregivers on Tuesday, September 22nd:

Dear 4th and 5th grade families,

In the coming days, all 4th and 5th grade virtual students will complete the STAR Reading and STAR Math Assessments. The STAR Assessments are completed three times a year in September, January, and May to give teachers a snapshot of each student's progress in reading and math.

A letter from the district is attached to this email, but we wanted to highlight some key points.
  1. Students are not allowed to get help. In order to get an accurate measure of what students can do independently, please do not assist them. This is very hard to do, even for us teachers!
  2. STAR tests are adaptive. This means the test gets harder or easier based on student responses. There WILL be questions your child will not get. Encourage them to give it their best try and move on to the next question.
  3. STAR results give teachers an overall score as well as information on specific skills where students can improve.
  4. Encourage students to take their time and do their best.
  5. The STAR Reading and Math assessments generally take around 15-30 minutes.
The STAR assessments will be part of our regular schedule. Mrs. Akey, Mrs. Applebee, and Mr. Wilhorn will use a live session to prepare students and provide links to get them where they need to be. You do not need to have students do it at this time.

Thank you!
Mr. Wilhorn & Mrs. Applebee

September 2020 McMillan Minute

The McMillan Minute is a YouTube video from Mrs. Jestadt, the WRPS district school librarian. It is a monthly video to share many of the activities available for kids and families through McMillan Memorial Library, the public library in Wisconsin Rapids. We will publish the McMillan Minute here each time it is available.

VLC Parent Letter- 9/10/20

 Hello!

Please read this letter from our District Curriculum Director regarding information about your 5th grader's virtual learning experience.

Note the information about the recording of our live lessons.  All live lessons will be recorded so that students can go back to view them at a later time.  To be clear, this means that your 5th grader may appear in the recording if they attended the live lesson.  Per Ms. Filtz's letter, the links to these recordings are only shared in Google Classroom, which is accessible to only Mr. Wilhorn, Mrs. Applebee, and the 5th grade students in our VLC.

Thank you!
